Marriott Bonvoy extends Free Night Awards and points expiry till 2022!

Today, Marriott Bonvoy announced some good news for it’s members! It’s clear that there’s been a reduction in travel and hotel stays over the past year.

So, Marriott is extending the expiry of eligible Free Night Awards (FNA), and Bonvoy points until next year!

Marriott Free Night Awards (FNA) extension

Starting on May 6, 2021, Marriott Bonvoy will automatically update members FNAs (with an original expiration date in 2020) to expire instead on January 3, 2022. This new policy will apply to FNAs from a promotion, annual choice benefit or from a co-branded credit card.

For example, the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card provides a Free Night Award yearly (upon card renewal)! This certificate is worth up to 35,000 points, meaning that you can redeem it at category 5 (off-peak and standard rate) or lower category hotels.

Unfortunately, FNAs with an original expiration date before 2020 will not be eligible for the additional extension.

Extension to Marriott Bonvoy points expiry date

Currently, Marriott Bonvoy has paused the expiration of points until August 1, 2021. Now with this announcement, the points expiration date has been extended until March 31, 2022!

This will give members whose accounts have been inactive for at least 24 months even more time for a points transaction to keep their account active and to redeem points in their account toward a stay.

Summary

With today’s announcement, Marriott Bonvoy is prolonging the expiry date of points and FNAs until 2022. This gives Marriott members more time to use their FNAs in the later half of 2021, if they feel safe to travel and use them.

This news comes on top of Marriott’s previous announcements in 2021. This included a 50% bonus in elite night credits for members and their double points & double elite nights promotion.
