Over the past year, there’s been an increase in the amount of shopping done in Canada. In fact, online shopping has almost doubled to record new highs due to the pandemic!

Well turns out, there is with the Rakuten cash back website. Whenever you use the Rakuten site to shop online with 750+ retail partners, you’ll receive cash back as your reward!
Some featured retailers include Walmart, Canadian Tire, Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart and Indigo.ca. For example, I’ve previously written about how Rakuten.ca was offering 4% cash back on online purchases at Indigo.ca last year.
Rakuten offers between 1% and 10% cash back
Offers vary all the time but generally Rakuten will offer somewhere between 1% and 10% cash back on purchases with select retailers. Some previous limited offers I’ve seen with Rakuten include 10% cash back with SAIL and 8% cash back with Shoppers Drug Mart!
Also, Rakuten will offer higher cash back (Flash sales) on special occasions throughout the year. Previously, Rakuten has offered 14% cash back on Valentine’s Day, 13% on St-Patrick’s day and 12% on April 1st.
So far, I’ve earned up to $80 in cash back with Rakuten just by shopping with partner retailers!

How to earn cash back with Rakuten
Earning cash back with Rakuten is quite easy.
- Log into the Rakuten cash back website before doing your online shopping
- Search and click the retailer you wish to shop with. This will open a new Internet browser tab.
- Proceed with your online purchase as normal.
- Usually within 48 hours, you’ll see the cash back in your Rakuten account! Note that with some stores it may take up to 30 days to confirm your cash back.
Redeem your Rakuten cash back
Rakuten offers several ways to automatically receive your cash back payment including:
- PayPal: Deposit your cash back to your verified PayPal account. Don’t have an account yet? Sign up for a new Paypal account and you can get a $10 bonus after spending $5!
- Cheque in the mail: Rakuten will send a cheque to your mailing address. Make sure to confirm your address before your first payment.
- Amazon gift certificates: Also, you can redeem your cash cack in the form of an electronic Amazon.ca gift certificates. Rakuten will email instructions on how to redeem your code for credits on Amazon.ca
Also, you can always switch your payment method by signing in to your Rakuten account and going to cash back method to change your settings.
When do you receive your Rakuten cash back?
Rakuten will automatically send out your cash back via your preferred payment method every 3 months. So, Rakuten will send your payment (for purchases posted during the previous quarter) based on the following schedule:
For example, if you make an online purchase via Rakuten on August 30th, you would then receive your cash back on November 15th.
Note that if you’ve earned less than $5.01 cash back, Rakuten will carry over your cash back rewards to the following payment period. Bonus Rewards do not count toward the $5.01 minimum payment threshold.

Overall, Rakuten is a great website that lets you earn cash back with your online purchases. There are many offers with participating Canadian retailers including Shoppers Drug Mart, Indigo.ca and Walmart.
